Consultant Solicitor

Peter Wilson is a Consultant Solicitor at Cheney Suthers Lawyers, having initially joined the firm as a partner in 1986 when he co-founded the predecessor practice, Cheney and Wilson Solicitors, alongside Tony Cheney. Admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales on 21 December 1977, Peter brings nearly five decades of legal experience to his consulting role and is one of the most respected and accomplished legal practitioners in Central West New South Wales.

Peter is a graduate of Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School and holds a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws from the Australian National University, where he studied from 1971 to 1976, and a Diploma of Financial Management from the University of New England, completed between 1976 and 1978. He is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Throughout his career, Peter conducted a thriving litigation practice spanning commercial disputes, succession disputes, employment law, personal injury and professional negligence. His particular areas of interest and expertise include farm succession, business law, taxation law, property law and conveyancing, informed by a lifetime of firsthand experience as a legal practitioner, farmer and property investor.

Peter and his family operate a mixed farming enterprise at Trangie in Central West New South Wales, producing wheat, wool, lamb and beef in partnership with his wife, son and daughter-in-law. Peter has a deeply informed understanding of the property, commercial and succession matters his clients navigate.

Peter’s contribution to the agricultural community extends well beyond his legal practice. He has served as a Board Member and Treasurer of the NSW Farmers Association, Chair of its Business Economics and Trade Committee, and as the Association’s representative on the National Farmers Federation Trade Committee. He has also served as a member of the Association’s Corporate Governance Committee, Chair of its Finance and Audit Committee, and is currently a member of the Association’s Constitutional Review Taskforce.
